What free cartooning of face images offline programs do you recommend for
turning a face image into something suitable for making a group of avatars?

Suitable means it still looks like you but it's a cartoon style of your
face.

Searching found plenty of payware but I'm seeking a freeware alternative.
https://www.befunky.com/features/photo-to-cartoon/
https://www.canva.com/apps/AAF19yeuTeE/cartoonify
https://www.cyberlink.com/blog/photo-effects/1657/cartoon-yourself-best-software

When I use the keyword "free", alls I get are "free downloads" or "free
trail version", and you know immediately what that means.

BTW, I just now tried Photo Into CariCature by Cidade
https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9nblggh2k4m8?hl=en-US&gl=US
blob:https://apps.microsoft.com/66c7685e-d869-4dfe-b918-eb64d4cd9da3
"We've downloaded an executable to help you install
Photo Into CariCature. Open this file in your downloads
to begin installation."

That web stub goes to the Microsoft Store and downloads a 477MB download.
But doesn't say where the installer went?

It's not in C:\Users\user\Downloads

Where would the installer be located so I can save it in the archive?

In Chrome, when I click the '[Download]' button on the 'detail' page,
I just get a 'Save As' [1] window, asking me where I want to save the
(Photo Into CariCature Installer.exe) file. I.e. like one would expect.

N.B. I have no idea what you mean by the 'blob:' 'URL'. For me, it
just gives a 'Page not found' error.

Alternatively: You can try to use the 'View in Store' button on the
'detail' page and install ('Get') from there. And no, I don't think you
need a Microsoft Account for that. I don't have one and the Microsoft
Store opens just fine.

As said above, if you don't want to use the Microsoft Store and
install from there, just use the '[Download]' button.

Ah! I tried the same thing in Edge and now it does not give a 'Save
As' window and indeed mumbles something about having put it in the
'Downloads' folder!

Edge is kind enough to give a small popup for that Downloads folder
and a little checking shows that the default location of that Downloads
folder is in your 'home' folder, in my case C:\Users\Frank\Downloads.
BTW, the Edge three-horizontal-dots menu also has a Downloads choice.

[1] Lately, you have a bit of a problem with 'Save As' windows, don't
you!? :-)

Eternal September, that's why. :>

I waited for fifteen minutes, and even checked the archives, and it wasn't
there so I figured it was lost by E-SEPT but it showed up way later.

I'll post a cancel to the original thread as I never intended on two.

Where the web stub went from the browser wasn't the problem, but what was
the problem was where the web stub stored the temporary download files.

There's no browser involved when you click the web stub executable.

Yep. If you click the blue "Download" button, it saves the web installer,
which doesn't really matter where that goes. For me, that web stub goes
into C:\Users\user\Downloads\Photo Into CariCature Installer.exe
Name: Photo Into CariCature Installer.exe
Size: 1058336 bytes (1033 KiB)
SHA256: 00321E9FC5DE7B92A0596641735B675C146C271524ABF0328FCB1C941D042ED0

But that's nothing but another downloader.

So the question is a Windows question to figure out WHERE that downloader
put the downloaded files of the much larger executable installer.

Even though I used Chrome to download the original stub, something
installed Microsoft Edge WebView on my system at the same time.

I suspect that was done by the Microsoft caricature installer stub.

It turns out that it's moot for this piece of what turns out to be
crapware, so I just now deleted Microsoft's Photo Into CariCature app.

That means the original question remains as to what's a good caricature
program for Windows that is free and which works (this crap doesn't work).

All the Photo Into CariCature program did was ask me for money.

But the Windows question also remains as to how to find WHERE the installer
went. Not where the stub went, but the installer (and not where the
installed files went either).

How do I figure out where the installer goes when these secret web
installers are doing everything under the sheets behind closed doors?

You can use Sysinternals Process Monitor. set the Filter to
Operation is CreateFile and Operation is WriteFile, to capture
all the writing going on. That will tell you which directory got
the materials. You can start the trace running, *before* you click
on the crapware and start it running and fetching something.

It could be using some area in AppData (hidden folder unless you
make it visible), it could be in SoftwareDistribution if the
BITS downloader was used, but a Microsoft Store application download,
might have a specific place for stuff like that.

Use (Search) Everything and search on recent files or/and files of a
certain size range?

'Everything'
<https://www.voidtools.com>

See 'Searching' in the FAQ, especially 'Advanced searching'.

Did you use Revo Uninsatller? It might show you all the garbage left behind and be some hint?

Suitable means it still looks like you but it's a cartoon style of your face.
